Atom Computing has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by demonstrating sustained, multi-round quantum error correction on its neutral-atom architecture using a toric code. This advancement marks the first instance of logical error rates improving as more physical qubits were added. The system was capable of preserving logical information even while replacing lost atoms mid-computation. This significant development indicates a shift from simply counting qubits to enhancing their reliability for practical use. Atom's partnership with Microsoft drives its plans for a 50-logical-qubit system by late 2026. Despite this progress, large-scale, fault-tolerant machines remain years away.
