PassGAN: A Closer Look at the Password-Cracking AI Tool
/With the rapid advancements in generative AI, the threat of machines taking over jobs is becoming increasingly real. PassGAN, an AI-based password-cracking tool, is causing panic among users due to its impressive abilities.According to a recent study by cybersecurity firm Home Security Heroes, PassGAN could crack 51% of common passwords in under a minute, 61% in an hour, 71% in a day, and 81% in a month. However, it is important to note that PassGAN is not a groundbreaking tool created in the wake of the generative AI era. It was introduced in 2017 and works no more efficiently than other non-AI password crackers.
While PassGAN may seem like a scary tool, it can only work to figure out passwords when there is a data breach and a database of password hashes leaks. When a website is hacked, hackers do not immediately gain access to passwords; instead, they only get access to the encrypted "hash" of passwords. Therefore, PassGAN cannot hack into user accounts directly. Regardless, it is important to exercise caution and set unique passwords for each account to avoid giving hackers a free pass to all accounts.
