Open Source PiEEG Board Makes Brain-Computer Interfaces Accessible to DIYers

A BCI researcher at Edinburgh’s Heriot-Watt University has developed an EEG acquisition board that snaps onto a Raspberry Pi, creating an easily accessible BCI development platform. The PiEEG board is open source and currently available on Crowd Supply for $250. This hardware, alongside higher-profile devices from tech giants like Neuralink, is helping to democratize DIY neurotech for makers. Open source hardware diagrams may be free, but fabricating the boards can be a barrier for many. As demand grew, the board’s creator started selling pre-made boards through Crowd Supply. The PiEEG boards will reportedly begin shipping in November 2023.
