Scientists have developed a new AI model that can accurately identify cancer, potentially speeding up the diagnosis and treatment process. The AI tool has been designed by experts at the Royal Marsden NHS foundation trust, the Institute of Cancer Research, London, and Imperial College London, and was tested on CT scans of 500 patients with large lung nodules. Using radiomics, the tool can extract vital information from medical images that are not easily spotted by the human eye. The model could identify each nodule's risk of cancer accurately, with an AUC of 0.87. More testing is necessary, but the model has shown clear potential to improve early detection and diagnose patients more quickly.
