Companies like Uber and Amazon using AI to discriminate wages for same work, says study

According to a new study, some companies including Uber and Amazon are using AI to pay workers “different amount for the same amount of work,” in a practice called “algorithmic wage discrimination." This means gig workers, doing the same job, are often paid different rates. These companies have access to massive data sets from their platform workers, which enables them to calculate the exact wage rates, leading to variable pay that is personalised to individuals. The practice, known as the gamblification of work, could possibly seep into the practices of other sectors, impacting more than just gig workers.
