Lawyer's Career on the Line After Using ChatGPT for Legal Filing with Non-Existent Cases

A lawyer's career is in danger after he used ChatGPT for legal filing and submitted non-existent cases as his basis for a lawsuit against Colombia's Avianca Airlines. Steven A. Schwartz, an attorney with 30 years of experience, admitted to using the chatbot in his filing, which could now potentially derail his career. US District Judge Kevin Castel is considering potential sanctions for Schwartz and his colleagues, including another attorney named Peter LoDuca. The opposing counsel discovered that six of the submitted cases were bogus with false quotes and citations. ChatGPT apologized for the confusion and claimed that some provided details were real and could be found in reputable legal databases, which turned out to be false. The case has been set for a separate hearing next month, and the plaintiff's lawyers might face punishment.
