India Warns Tech Companies of Bans for Allowing Deepfake Videos to Spread

India has issued a stern warning to tech companies, stating that they are prepared to impose bans if the companies fail to take action against the spread of deepfake videos. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the Deputy IT Minister, announced plans to amend the nation's IT Rules to establish definitive laws against deepfakes. The ministry expressed dissatisfaction with technology companies' lack of adherence to government advisories on manipulative content. Chandrasekhar emphasized that platforms will face legal consequences if they do not effectively combat deepfakes, which are deemed unlawful and dangerous. Sachin Tendulkar, India's cricket icon, recently cautioned his fans about manipulated video ads falsely using his likeness to endorse an online gambling platform. Concerns are growing over the potential spread of deepfakes ahead of India's general elections in April.
