Clearview AI Used by US Police for Almost 1 Million Searches, Facial Recognition Technology Under Fire
Facial recognition firm Clearview AI has revealed that US police have used the technology for almost a million searches, sparking concerns around privacy and civil liberties. The company’s software, which allows law enforcement to upload a photo of a suspect’s face and find matches in a database of billions of images it has collected, has been repeatedly fined millions of dollars for breaches of privacy in Europe and Australia. Despite this, US police continue to use the technology, often for crimes of all types. Yet, numerous cases of mistaken identity have emerged, casting doubts on the accuracy of the software. Civil rights campaigners are calling for greater transparency and independent review of the technology's use.
