Artificial intelligence tools reduce Kenyan freelancers' income from writing assignments for US college students

In a major hit to the contract cheating industry, AI tools like ChatGPT are cutting into the earnings of Kenyans who write assignments for American students, leading to a dip in their income for the sector. Freelancers, offering "academic writing" services, are turning to AI-based solutions to generate their content, and according to a Study survey, more than 89% of the students admitted to using ChatGPT to get help with their homework assignments. The rise of large language models (LLMs) would cause a ripple effect, disrupting the supply of academic writers in Kenya. Various colleges have issued recommendations and guidelines for staff on these practices but avoided an outright ban.
