AI-Generated Pop Culture Takes Over: Viral Videos Already Here
AI tools are now being used to create viral videos with ease, as exemplified by a Berlin-based photographer who used Midjourney, ElevenLabs, and D-ID to create a Harry Potter-fashion video for Balenciaga. The video's meaningless collision of cultural symbols is its most compelling aspect, proving that it's "entertainment," according to the video's creator. New Yorker writer Kyle Chayka commends the video's "appealingly odd" concept, but notes that the final output's success still depends on the human originator – AI has yet to come up with good taste. ChatGPT states that there has been a "blurring of the lines between real and artificial" because of AI-generated imagery. AI-generated pop culture has now entered the mainstream, and it seems unlikely that it will ever disappear. With generative AI democratizing execution, the human is still responsible for ideation, curation, and editing.
