OpenAI CEO Considers Opening Office in Japan as Government Considers AI Adoption

OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman is considering expanding services and opening an office in Japan after a meeting with Prime Minister Fumio Kishida. Japan is evaluating the possibility of introducing AI-powered technology such as OpenAI's ChatGPT chatbot, but is examining the benefits and risks including privacy and copyright infringement. Italy recently temporarily banned ChatGPT due to privacy concerns, but OpenAI presented measures to remedy these concerns to the Italian regulator last week. Altman hopes to build something great for the Japanese people and culture, while Japan continues to evaluate possibilities of introducing AI to reduce government workers' workload. Cabinet minister Taro Kono hopes the Group of Seven Digital Ministers' meeting later in April will discuss AI technologies including ChatGPT and issue a united message.
