AI Voice Scammers Demand $1M Ransom from Arizona Mom

An AI voice cloning technology was used by scammers to clone the voice of a teen girl and demanded a $1 million ransom from her mother in Arizona. The incident is among the latest in a “caller ID spoofing” scheme where the recipient is made to believe that a relative has been taken hostage and is threatened to harm them if the instructed ransom is not paid. The AI technology can clone a person’s voice with just three seconds of a soundbite, and voice cloning technology can even recreate a person’s “inflection” and “emotion,” according to a professor at Arizona State University.
