Elon Musk's OpenAI funding claims revised after filings show he gave far less.

According to a new report, Elon Musk's claim of having given $100 million to OpenAI is incorrect and filings show that OpenAI received no more than $133.2 million since its inception through 2021. Musk's claims have since been revised in a recent CNBC interview where he said, "I’m not sure the exact number but it’s some number on the order of $50 Million." The report found that the only "publicly disclosed cash contribution" that backs up Musk's financial ties to OpenAI was a $10 million donation made through his 501(c)3 non-profit via a non-profit connected to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Musk also provided non-cash contributions such as Tesla vehicles worth nearly $250k, gifted to OpenAI in 2017.
