China Arrests Man for Using AI to Write False News

Chinese authorities have detained a man for using AI technology to produce and publish fake news, claiming that nine people had died in a train accident in April. The man reportedly used ChatGPT, a generative AI editing tool, which is banned in China, but easily accessed through a VPN. This marks the first time that China's new "deepfake" regulations have been applied. The new law, which was introduced in January, requires AI-generated content to be explicitly labelled and have its original source listed. Additionally, anyone using generative software to edit voice or image must seek prior consent. Violators could face charges of "picking quarrels and provoking trouble," which carry a sentence of five to ten years in prison.
